What makes Jay so special?

...He went on to confirm that Jay Electronica will appear on Nigger, as producer and MC, after thoroughly...

URB

After reading the briefest of interviews, do you think Nas will vocalize his praise for Jay on Act II? a la Just and Erykah on Act I.

...I remain completely in love with the material i've heard from him. Apart from some thugstep with Lil Flip and Guilty. Eugh.

Blu & Exile - Blu Collar Worker

More from the talented duo. There are 'making of' videos about but I dont see why we have a sudden need for them these days, unless the artist is doing something really 'new era'. .

Rising Down

New heat from the Roots. Who else?

Ft. Mos Def, Dice Raw & Styles P

Thanks to OKP.

Hello hello hello hello…

(MOS DEF)
Every anywhere heights plains peaks or valleys
Entrances exits vestibules and alleys
Winding roads that test the firm nerve
fortune or fatal behind the blind curve
The engine all purr life's flash to a blur
speed work through the earth make your motor go scurrr
tonight at noon watch a bad moon rising
identities in crisis and conflict diamonds
blindin staring at lights till they cryin
bone gristle popping from continuous grindin
grapes of wrath in a shapely glass
ingredients influential on your ways and ask
zero tolerance to raise the tax
it don't matter how your gates is latched
you aint safe from the danger jack
made a way before they made the map
or a GPS this is DEF leader

(DICE RAW)
I know where I'm goin even when its dark and being let down that road
Hello hello hello hello…
you don't see that somethings wrong earth's spinnin outta control
Hello hello hello hello…
Everything's for sale even souls someone get God on the phone
Hello hello hello hello…
Northside nigga Southside
Hello hello hello hello…
shits poppin off Worldwide
Hello hello hello hello…

(BLACK THOUGHT)
Between the greenhouse gases and earth spinnin off its axis
got mother nature doin back flips the natural disasters
its like 80 degrees in Alaska you in trouble if u not an Onasis
it aint hard to tell that the conditions is drastic
just turn on the telly check for the news flashin
how you want it bagged paper or plastic
lost in translation or just lost in traffic
yo I dont wanna floss I done lost my passion
and I ant trying to climb yo i lost my traction
they makin me break my contents under pressure
do not shake I'm workin while the boss relaxin
here come Mr. tax man he leavin a fraction give me back some
matter fact next pay check it's like that son
I'll fuck around and have to hurt a few men
They probably chalk it up as a disturbing new trend hello

(DICE RAW)
Chorus…

(TYLES P)
Should I say hello or should I say that hell is low
And my nigga or a niggero I'm an African American
They sell drugs in the hood but the man he move the medicine
He'll prescribe you …… for everything
a little stuffy nose tell you get some Claritin
you know I'm hip to it and its hard to claim the land
when my great great great grands were shipped to it
look at technology they call it downloading
I call it downsizing somebody follow me
Does a computer chip have an astrology
When it fuck up could it give you an apology
Could it
Should it say hello or should it say goodbye
Try to understand how smart and how hood am I, It don't matter though
until we learn that the world don't turn right ,we all on the scatter though

(DICE RAW)
Chorus…

Best yet...This will be in my head allll night rest assured.

Rising Down April 29th.

Worldwide 12.03.08

Gilles Peterson's Worldwide (Listen Again until 19.03.08)

Worldwide review pt. 1

It was a soundtrack sort of show last night

I love the Dubstep I’m hearing at the minute. One I’ve been feeling over the past couple of weeks is 2562 “Kameleon” as played by Domu on DEVIATION a few weeks ago. Now that is totally dark – really blew me away. And so did Appleblim And Peverelist’s “Circling” that Gilles played last night. A stunning piece; And so was the Pinch track as well. And keeping it on that whole moody Soundtrack tip, Dubstep, for me, is ideal if you looking for that ‘Intense dramatic’ kinda vibe.

Jonny Greenwood “There Will Be Blood” – Oh yes. Plenty of ‘drama’. Must check the film as well.

And on that sort of tip, really loving the moody slant to the show of late. The Invisible “Spiral” – now, that’s pure moodiness. Jade Fox and Matthew Hebert on the buttons, i believe. And it was really nice of Gilles to play that Jamie Lidell tune again. “Rope Of Sand”. Really love that!

Loved the Modal ‘episodes’ as well: Belmondo feat. Yusef Lateef “Part 4: Brother John” – Brilliant. Classic. Brad Mehldau Trio “B Flat Waltz” – Beautiful. And, man, I loved Paul Horn “Anthony And Cleopatra Theme”. Flute. Big Jazz music. Got a few of his records - always deep. Shout to Weegee on Paul Horn as well.

Worldwide review pt. 2

Another great show it has to be said.

Standouts for me in the 2nd hour( with a lickle comment and ting):

Erykah Badu "Amerykahn Promise" (Really love the back in the day raregroove vibe it sits on).

Baby Charles "Trading Water" (Sharon Jones-esque. Tune).

Brother Jack McDuff "Oblighetto" (original acid jazz music).

Cataylist "How About Us" (Love, love, love this. Reminds me of the movie SHAFT and Afros for some weird reason haha. Can’t wait to hear this loud and proud in the summer at some open festival. Imagine this early on as people arrive at Good Times?? BIG TUNE. Spacek = VOCALIST. My tune of the show).

Plantlife "Sun Shines Through your Love" (always love their stuff. Still love their tune from a few years ago: “When She Smiles She Lights The Sky” – uplifting!).

Breakwater "Say You Love Me Girl" (an ALL-OUT Soul boy tune. Simple).

Sunburst Band "Turn It Out" (I have a lot respect for Joey Negro. I’ve been a fan for many many years. Once again, revisiting his old disco/boogie roots and infusing that sound with the beats of today. This one reminds me of Roy Ayer’s “Programmed For Love” – a track he recorded in the mid 80s. Original broken beat music).

Big show

: )

.....
Hahaha. Too much cough syrup? Will be huge though, I'ma put my mortgage on it.

Who is the King of Grime..?

We are still no closer to finding out. . Lets just say its Wiley on the grounds that he speaks the most sense. But laughing at Doctor trying to make his Nike ID's near the end is worth the watch.

I'm still not happy that Ghetto was calling out EVERYONE. . Yeah, he's a talented MC but at the same time like Jammer says. . he needs to slow down. Competition brings the best out of people. . so i guess it can only be good for the scene. Trim's Soulfood Vol. 3 is out sometime this week/next week, as well as Ghetto's Freedom of Speech. Make sure you support.. both will be available in your highstreet record stores. Even HMV.

Looking further ahead. Kano's mixtape will be dropping in April, absolutely no news apart from that on it, but he's also told his label 679, to start packing - so that he can go back to his roots. We shall see. . Still, I'm very excited.

Just trying to think what else there is to pass on.. Bashy's Black Boy's...bonus/limited edition/boxset/dvd/cd extravaganza type thing is also out this week. I'm getting enough promo emails about it. Thankyou, honestly. You'l know its one of the biggest things to come out of grime - and most likely we will still be looking back at it in years to come. So you probably want to own a copy.

Pitchforks Month in Grime/Dubstep appeared again... Here.

Ahh yeah.. .finally heard 'Wearing My Rolex' in a club. . Would've been awesome had i not been surrounded (ALL ANGLES) by those 'only there for my image' hipsters. .

Theres always the next time. .

BONUS: MP3: Chipmunk - Av Fun

To Serve With Love

Its a little late here. . so taken directly from the press notes. .

Armed with little more than his father’s extensive record collection of jazz, soul, psychedelic rock, folk, comedy and a Kurzweil 2000 keyboard – Black Spade’s music is a melting pot of sounds hailing from St. Louis by way of New York, Detroit, LA, and everywhere that hip-hop has carved a distinctive and influential sound for itself.

Writing and producing all his music along with MC’ng, Spade’s one man team approach is full of burbling synths, and off-kilter drums while his voice slides smoothly over choruses coated in multi-tracked vocals and skipping roughshod drums. Attributing his distinctive sound to his home of St. Louis, Black Spade explains “We get a piece of everything by being in the middle.” However, he feels no harmonious connection to where St. Louis pop acts like Nelly, Chingy, etc. have taken hip-hop lately. Spade’s style is not like the norm. This undercurrent shows through all his music and can be heard in songs like ‘Evil Love,’ where the keyboard hits less than a second after you expect it to. It’s subtle, but these little things are what make Black Spade’s music so compelling.
At his core, Black Spade is a producer who makes music because he loves to. His sounds are grounded in the past while still sounding futuristic, and most importantly come from the heart. Spade says, “To get my music out there to people… at the end of the day that’s what really counts.”

Its brillliant. . 18 tracks pushing all sorts makes for a really engaging listen. . Listen HERE.

Midweek Threes

Picture from Sweeneykovar. Thankyou.

MP3: Wiley - Kings (Instrumental)
- - - - Slowly more and more wiley is finding its way to me. . This is the latest piece. . There is a vocalled version around, with a guest from Chipmunk. But like Wiley's Myspace page. . you have to give props to his production.

MP3: Elephant Man - Wine Up On Me (Daybreak Riddim)

- - - - The daybreak riddim got passed to me over the weekend. . . and they've been killing me since then. 3 outstanding cuts. . This, one by Vybz Kartel and a Chino/Wayne Marshall collaboration. . . Thanks to heads at fathertronix. Have one more...

MP3: Vybz Kartel - Tightest Punani (Daybreak Riddim)
- - - - Potentially better than the Elephant Man take. And equally dirty.

MP3: John Legend - Used To Love U (Live In Phillie)
- - - - From the newly released live album. . . Consistently brillliant it seems. New album coming this year sometime. Skateboard P rumours.

MP3: Termanology & Snuk & Hectic - Where You Are (Ft. Nigel Hall)
- - - - If there is new Term, you know I'm gunna be all over it. His weed carriers do a decent job too. . . Think 2dopeboyz are to thank for this. Thanks.

MP3: Akrobatik - Rain (Ft. Brenna Gethers)
- - - - One of the strongest albums in 08 (to date) is from Akrobatik. . Definitely worth your 2 cents. Nothing agressive from Ak here. . much deeper sounds. What is the sample...? Driving me mad.

MP3: Lars Bartkuhn - Dimensions
- - - - Again, the week brings a solitary piece of electronics. A beauty it is however. From the promo that Sonar Kollektiv always send out to preview forthcoming 12's. . Theres also a brilliant remix from Marcus Worgut that is certainly worth checking. I'l probably throw a few more in from the promo in the next few days. . Label permitting.

...Done. The amount around at the moment, I could probably do another 3 of these. . Ain't no brag either. haha. . . Make sure you support as always. .

Right Now, I'm hating on Roma (FC) and sharebee (Hence the lack of mirrors).. but if you need a re-up..just get @ me.

Black Thought on 75 Bars

"Thats all it is. its dope. its hip hop. its new , yet classic. theres nothing else to be read into the equation. i could go on and on about how that dude represents every record company exec that ever looked at me wrong or every critic that ever underestimated my caliber ... but he doesnt. he's just "some dude" who did "some shit" and now he regrets it. the rest, we leave up to u to interpret. 75 bars is raw, drum driven, in your face emceeing. period. yes its a little nostalgic and reminiscent of 1987 but hey, thats when we started this thing of ours that has become the roots/ okp brand and when, in my opinion, hip hop was a lot more real so, every now and then i like to revisit that. long story short, we had no idea what race the hostage would be before the shoot and didnt really care if dude was white, black, asian, latino or martian, he was gonna get it either way. our concern was a visual that compliments the music. i think we have that. the only other concern was to get yall blogaholics to chirping and creating an awareness of the upcoming album. i think we've done that too. everything else is cake. .... and we're not a bunch of vegetarians but why do u care?"

Completely killing all the confusion and debate on the Okayplayer forums. . Big track.

Brownswood Loves...Bass

I couldnt make the first of Gilles & Brownswoods new residency at equally new Eastvillage Club (Shoreditch, London). . I'm still slightly bitter, I won't lie.

My new friend Dayo breaks it down for you all. .

Gilles’ gig last night at East Village conjured up images of his old Bar Rhumba nights for some reason. I sense something big in the offing for him at East Village. It’s always nice when you can get your core crowd out (especially on a Thursday night) and he did just that. What a night!

As you all know East Village has just recently opened and it is very apparent that the management want to cater for clubbers who care about music; the state of the art sound system in place is bound to give eargasm.

Gilles was gradually building his set when I arrived - and it was great timing me for as well, because my tune of the night was just ‘rolling’ in: The Rebirth “This Journey In”. I've often said that Gilles is very adept at communicating with his hardcore dance floor audience. This was Gilles telling us that summer is around corner. A summer siren tune if ever there was one. It blew everyone away last night. And I’ll tell you another tune that got heads bobbing last night: Catalyst feat. Spacek “How About Us”. No exaggeration, I spotted EVERYONE head nodding and dancing when Gilles dropped this one. BIG TUNE. simple. And let me just say, right here right now: a definite contender for my tune of 2008.

And if you like, Gilles just set the high standards for the rest of the night - he dropped pure tune after tune after tune. Loved it when he played “Thank You Jesus” - yes Gilles. And how lush did Leon Haywood’s “Long As There’s You I Got Love” sound?. There were a lot of ‘old’ soul bwoys in the joint last night and I spotted their grin of approval when it was playing. An ALL-OUT ravers tune. Gilles also gave us some jazz, and I tell you what, that new oz version of “I Bet You Thought I wouldn’t Find You” is the bonkers. The dance floor went mad for it. Even Heidi was moving hard to it.

Then Gilles started to bang it. And by then, the PACKED dance floor was going into overdrive. Linkwood Family’s “Piece of Mind” blew everyone away (love the way they cut up Leo’s Sunships’s “I’ Back For More” on this one). Just shading it as my banger of the night was: Quality Control “Slippin’” - I almost missed a step on the busy dance floor when Gilles dropped this one. PROPER HOUSE - and a very clever cut up of War’s classic. Gilles P - take bow.

And then Gilles gave way to the very lovely DJ Moni. And I don’t know about you guys, but I thought she did really well - all things considered. UK dj’ing debut and all that! The crowd thinned out a bit after her first couple of tunes; but the mark of a good dj is to start from scratch and re-engage the floor. And she did just that! By the time I was leaving (had to be at work very early this morning), the busy dance floor had been reinstated. DJ Moni, now in her element, was dropping some deep deep house numbers - including one of my current faves - which was playing as I said my goodbyes: The Linkwood Family “RIP”. No joke, I was tempted to stay on when she dropped this one. Love this to the bone. And I would love to know the one she played before the Linkwood track. Proper deep. Blew me away. Big up DJ Moni (and her mate). Please come back soon. Respect. I love honeys from the states - they are always smiling - unlike some of our ‘screwface’ London girls - LOL!

Upstairs:

It wasn’t that busy upstairs - which is kind of understandable if you have a super star DJ downstairs (with photographers in tow) - naturally everybody wanted to check Gilles out. But that’s to take nothing away from Ross Allen and Thristian who both did a sterling job upstairs. I sneaked upstairs a few times (you’ll know what I’m like) and they were dropping some corkers. Thristian (nice one rudebwoy) played some wicked dubstep. Might have to text him for details. And the mighty Ross Allen (a pleasure to finally meet you sir) was dropping the living disco. I’m really back into my disco at the minute (music from my yoot) and so it was only natural that I should completely lose it when Ross played Candido “Dancing and Prancing” - HOW wicked did that sound again last night??? Love love love that! Original Acid Jazz music. But my tune of his set was this Kathy Diamond thing he played. He told me it was a little Maurice Fulton thing. I tell you what, I don’t know what I’ve been listening to all this while. Need that! Ross Allen always pulls them out - Full Respect!

BIG NIGHTTTT!!!

Gilles P - Give thanks! Respect.

A big thanks to him . . going to try and hold him down for this type of thing consistently. An impeccable taste in music, and very engaging when he writes.

EDIT: SHOULD REALLY SHOUT OUT THE CLUB AT SOME POINT TOO. . . By all accounts it looks like its going to be something special. Very suave set up and the web site matches. www.eastvillageclub.com

i send the devil to hell every time that i get wicked

I never got shook up by talks of Illuminati
I’m from where niggas talk that talk
then walk around the streets all day
carrying heat like the human body
stress – we mastered that
death – we laugh at that
you niggas sweeter than the cog-ni-ac
i never sleep and when my eyes is closed
i’m in a deep battle for sheep. i’m an insomniac.
but when it comes to the rhymes, a hypochondriac
the flow so sickly, splash a hot round on me
peel off quickly. luckily,
now one of you niggas could fuck with me
i hit you with a plus degree
mind detect mind, plus mind detect matter
with that i say peace to the g.o.‘s
and all my niggas locked away in cages, giving shit to the c.o.‘s
doing long stretches on the track
cuz they fell into the trap of the Neo’s
the Farrakhan of rap, giving dap to the people
busting shots at the eagle
with the arrows in its talon, sneaking shots when you peep through your peephole
spit the abracadabra, manipulate matter with a black magic created to eradicate evil
so if they call me a rapper, okay yeah i can dig it
but if they bring me before the congress, then i can kick it
i send the devil to hell every time that i get wicked
i get to eye (something something) basura, yeah, i get lifted

one for money, two for the pussy and fame
three hundred’ll go to the court to change my name
like cassius. the past just show me lessons.
stay on my grind and pray that time will show me blessings
was my old model. i’m from the magnolia projects
where dice rollers and heroin addicts is role models
so i had no choice but to kick it to full throttle.
my nigga’s in Philly’ll probably tell you – the bol’s thorough
now, either you with me or you with me
cuz even if you against me, running with my enemies
they ain’t nothing but mini-me’s
that i created long, long ago
and they only want to cut off
my lineage like the kennedys
that being the case,
you should be aware I blast many a face
and left niggas displaced like Katrina did
and gave them very little with nothing like Fema did
and I ain’t never seen a bid
well, there was one time when me and ali tussled with one-time
for claiming our sovereignty as a nation and bloodline
you niggas should give a standing ovation
to the mc who stands in the face of satan
hitting them with Creation

Been sitting on this for a while. .

Everything I Am + Freestyle

I hate that I'm posting another video.... Thanks to KanyeLive

I was at an under 500 person Kanye Concert CD release concert the week of Graduation album release. We werent supposed to video tape, but I got the entire “everything I am” song he did with a close to 1 min freestyle that was really nice. It was at Big Boys backyard breakfast, only 4 days after 50 cent had done the same show. Anyway, I just now found the video and put it up on youtube. No other sites have this version, the guy next to me who was filming got his camera taken away.

- - - - - - - -

In other Kanye related news.. Rumours are suggesting that 50 cent will be on the flashing Light remix...

And, I'm just off to listen to my newly received John Legend In Philadelphia collection.. MmmmM.

Some people loved “Show Me What You Got” and some people hated it, but from the musical standpoint when you get into the instruments, you can’t hate on that. That record was meant to be performed live. When I made that beat, I didn’t expect it to be the lead single for Jay-Z’s comeback album. I knew Jay was going to be touring with a band, probably Amir and the Iladelhphonics and that was a record that they could rock. That record was going to be a showstopper where the bass section could get busy and the horn section could get busy. If you ever saw that record with a live band performing it then you'll get it if you didn't before.
